Novato Charter School Review by a Student

Posted June 6, 2013
I would agree with the review posted on November of 2011. The school has had some turnover from senior staff and budget seems to be an issue. This school is going in the wrong direction. The teachers are dated in their views about how a child should act. The children in this school do not want to follow up their high school experience at another Waldorf system. Overall very dissapointed with their handling of my childs education and personal growth.

I found this honest student review nestled among 95 bliss-ninny one-liner reviews.

This school, coming from a student, is a good school, teaches good material, but
is stuck in the 60's. Any use of cell phones, gaming devices or any other
technological thing is forbidden and, if found, confiscated. In the kindergarten
kids get in trouble for, and I quote, "TV Talk". Yes, thats right, even the mere
MENTION of the word "Spider-man" is punishable. Other than this and the issues
with budget (the school seems to be getting poorer and poorer every day) it is a
good school. Worries about kids being teased/bullied, begone! The school has a 0
tolerance policy for things like this. The school is a raffle school with a long
waiting list, so you might need to wait to get your kid in. One of the teachers
(who I will leave unnamed) has an obsession with making kids pick up trash,
which is very annoying. Also, the teachers tend to favor girls a LOT more than
boys, so be prepared if your child is a boy. Last but not least, it has "main
lesson", which is where you learn something, write a draft, draw a final (needs
to be neat, have a nice border, etc.) then draw a picture. Very boring, takes a
long time. Overall, its a pretty good school.

This School is a racist, homophobic cesspool located in modular buildings arranged like a trailer park. The "Director" Rachel Bishop stonewalls all complaints and tells everyone "Gee, thats the first time i heard that issue" when in fact harassment, bias and favoritism has been rampant. Since the State Dept of Education visited last year, they finally drafted the "uniform complaint process" other schools have had for years and now must keep records of incidents going forward. This is NOT anything like a Waldorf school. In the past several years, the teacher turnover is astonishing with very few veteran teachers remaining. If your child is lucky enough to be in one of the many cliques...you will LOVE it here.....if not your child would be better served attending school elsewhere.

  1. I have no problem saying NCS ruined my life. Forcing us to believe in fairies, gnomes, and other stupid fairy tales was absolutely horrific. All kids were forced to learn violins, or other high pitched instruments. Believe it or not, there was something worse. We had to sign in to go to the bathroom. Yup, the school had to know when and what you were doing in the bathroom. I wouldn't recommend this school to my worst enemy.

  2. Im my opinion the Novato Charter school is a hateful place located on a soddy cement patch filled with angry teachers who never acheived their goals and spend their time bullying and harassing kids. To make matters worse the school is arranged like a trailer park. Possibly the worst thing about the school is the music teacher, Kenny Blacklock. He is a sad little man with no life and no compassion he instead spends his punishing kids for his own pleasure. As one of his many victims i was forced to attend music every day with no option of quitting the program. The music program is a waking nightime you can never wake up from and can never escape from, I can easily compare kenny and his class to hell. Once Mrs.Lloyd became priciple the school she turned into a sort of dictator who bullying and punishised those she didnt like. She once kept my class in for a week because she heard a sigh after she unfairly banned hockey. Overall i give this school one star and hope that if your reading this i have warned you enough so you dont make the same mistake.

You may ask, "where are all the 5=Star reviews?" Well, the problem with those reviews is that many tend not to be too honest. I have included 4-star reviews that appear honest. Often, gushing reviews are placed by teachers and administrators - as some comments here indicate. "This school educates the whole child!!!" - 5 stars - by Anonymous... I say baloney! Notice, many of the reviewers have been misled by Waldorf and are still buying the PR, even after having been disappointed. Feel free to comment but understand the intent of this blog.
